What is a Gateway Server?

A gateway server is a device that transforms data streams between a client and another server to better match device capabilities. For example, a WAP gateway server converts HTML to Wireless Markup Language (WML) for a wireless device on the client's side. This type of server typically helps serve content to users who cannot access the remote server, but companies can also use a gateway server to set additional security restrictions on the client.
