What Is a CDN (Content Delivery Network)?

A content delivery network (CDN) is a distributed set of proxy servers that store cached content in locations that are geographically closer to end-users. Keeping data near users enables a CDN to serve content with less latency as data does not have to travel as far as when you rely on a single origin server. Another common name for CDN is the content distribution network.
