A file hash (or hash value) is a distinctive alphanumeric character sequence generated by applying a mathematical algorithm to file contents. The algorithm outputs a fixed string representing the file’s data and functions as a digital fingerprint.
File hashes are sensitive to changes, and minimal alterations result in a different hash. Hashes are frequently used in authentication, verifying data integrity, and secure file transfers.
